Hello everyone
As the holiday period draws to an end there is still plenty of time to catch a feed, during the last few weeks we have had a lot of solid reports of where they have been biting so here is the latest, alright lets start with the Blue water where there have been plenty of Striped, Black and Blue Marlin around the HOT spot at the moment is Port Stephens where some boats are raising 6 to 8 Marlin a day, with the water temperature at 25 dec it looks like a big season ahead.
Last Saturday we finally took the Running Bear out for the first time this season unfortunately sea conditions were ordinary with 25 knots of S/E winds and rain squalls pushing through all morning so we decided to troll out from Moon Island, even the water temp a couple of miles out was around 23 dec but it wasn’t until we hit 70 fathoms before we tagged the first fish a Striped Marlin around 70 kg. We then headed out to the 90 fathom mark where we found plenty of bait but nothing much else however a few hours later I feed a live bait over and hooked up the a Black Marlin around the 80 kg mark which was also tagged and released, but it seemed the best bite was certainly up the bay.
Back in Lake Macquarie its been a very busy time however the lake has held well with plenty of fish to be had, reports of Kingfish up to 90 cm been taken on both bait and lures Wangi Point, Coal Point and the Marks Point drop over have been the hot spots these fish have been mixed in with Tailor up to 60 cm, there have also been plenty of Flathead action once again on both lures and bait however due to the breeding period releasing the larger fish at this time is more important than ever. Mulloway have been a little quiet but if your prepared to put the time in there are still a few around as well as a few small reds some around the 1 to 2 kg mark.
Swansea channel has been alive with Whiting some fish up to 46 cm, Tube worms seem the best bait by far, just last week my good mate Dave Butfield came up to Swansea to film another Hook on Tackle World show which will be on Fox channel Aurora at 6.30 pm this Saturday night, on this show we target the channel Whiting on worms and explain the rig and what to look for, on the day we landed 14 Whiting up to 42 cm I hope you enjoy the show. Around the Swansea bridge there are a few Kingfish mixed in with Tailor and even a couple of Bonito poppers and live squid once again proving to be the pick with some Kings around the 1m mark.
This week also sees the start of the January prawn run this will be your last chance to catch a feed of lake prawns before October, this has also meant we have seen a build up of big numbers of Bream throughout the lake, areas such as Salts Bay and the Swansea flats will be well worth a try, even on surface poppers.
Blacksmiths breakwall and Belmont beach are producing good numbers of Whiting, mainly on the low tide mixed in with Dart and Bream. Much to everyones surprise there appears to be a few Tailor around these fish have been mixed in with large schools of Bonito, Salmon and even Kingfish it seems everything is on the chew.
Regards
Jason
