Fishing Reports
G’day All,
Well we have decided to get our act together and get a fishing report done….
You could be mistaken for thinking that there is no point heading out for a fish at the moment with the wind howling, temperatures dropping and all the rain we have had of late, making the prospect of a trip not worth it. Yes it is cold, put a jumper on. Yes the wind does blow a bit, find a sheltered area or put on another jumper. Yes it might rain, put on a rain coat and another jumper. There are some nice fish to be had now and if you are prepared for the weather then it will make your fishing outing, that much more enjoyable. The fact is that this is still a great time to be going fishing. There are many areas to target and we will start this report in the lake.
Tailor are about in good numbers at the moment and the places to be trying are down at Pulbah Island, Coal and Wangi Points and even at the drop over. The majority of fish have been caught using deep divers or when they are ‘up top’ feeding off baitfish on the surface, then trolling white feathers, Smith’s Jigs and even casting small chromies at a school will bring rewards. If you spot the fish working on the surface, don’t scream over to them. Position the boat so that you get in their path, as you are less likely to spook them that way. Some big fish have been caught at night by those chasing jewies on big baits so don’t be surprised if you land a few then.
Speaking of Jewies, there have been a huge number of fish caught in the lake over the last few weeks. Most fish have been around the 3-8kg mark, with several fish over 10kg noted as well. Best baits have been fresh squid (that you can catch yourself in the channel) as well as strip baits like mullet and yellowtail. Night time is the best time, although a few fish have been caught during the day by those that have been using the bigger 7” gulps for flathead. Remember that the water has cooled down a bit now so your retrieve is going to be a lot more subtle that a ‘rip and tear’ type retrieve you would normally use in summer so it makes sense with a slower retrieve that the jewies would be taking the lures.
Bream are about with some cracking fish caught on lures the last few weeks. Best areas to try are down South in the deeper water, although a few smaller fish have been landed near the sand islands. Vibe lures have been the pick with the larger sizes catching the bigger fish. If bait fishing, there have been some notable catches around Green Point jetty, Point Woollstoncroft, and near Myuna Bay. Night time is still the time (remember to pack some warm clothes) to try with baits to use being mullet strips, mullet gut and Hawkesbury river prawns. Fish in the shallows and with the moon abating, then fishing should be a bit easier in these shallows.
In the channel, there have been some big winter flathead caught. Lures and live baits are doing the damage. There are also a few squid about so have a drift from Blackies boat ramp towards the bridge using a couple of jigs on a dropper and you could get results. If after greeneyes, there have been reports of a few at the Island. Out at the island there are tailor and it looks like that the salmon have started to show up. Jason says there are some big pigs, reds and a few kingies out there also.
If wanting to fish off the rocks, then reports of luderick and plenty of pigs down towards Catho as well as up towards Redhead have been coming in. We weighed a nice fish to 3kg cleaned the other day although there have been a few larger fish brought up to the rocks.
Blackies beach and breakwall have plenty of salmon with a few tailor about. Small chromies are the lures to use or if bait fishing, then pilchards on ganged hooks are the go. There have been a few whiting caught as well as bream and flathead, but not in numbers. The surprise has been the lack of jewies caught off the beaches lately, although over the next couple of weeks there could be a few about.
Offshore is “on fire’ with the deep water from the Farm down to Texas being the pick. Those jigging down at Texas have been getting 10kg kingies and those using live baits have had similar joy. There are reds and Sampson fish there also. Leather jackets are not as bad as usual at the Farm, so those heading out have managed to get trag, mowies and reds. All in all, it will be a good weekend for those heading out wide.
Well hopefully this report has covered a few areas to fish and hopefully, those that venture out will be rewarded.
Have yourselves a good week.
Kind regards,
Jan Mikula.
