Hello everyone
Looks like we only just scraped in with the good weather over the Easter break, this week it has a real winter feel to it with 30 knot plus winds out of the south and a freezing wind chill about it, I certainly hope its not here to stay and looking towards the weekend we may get a break around the Friday onwards. With this cold change on most breakwalls and headlands we have seen a gathering of commercial fisherman waiting for the annual Mullet run as these fish move out of the lakes and rivers to head north to spawn, with this we will also see large schools of Bream and Luderick building up, already there a big numbers of Luderick throughout Swansea channel and down south towards Catherine Hill Bay with some fish well over the kg mark. On Saturday night I went fishing with my old mate Peter Sims, it properly wasn’t the best night to be Bream fishing considering it was a full moon however I managed 8 nice size fish all on mullet gut most of the fish were traveling fish with plenty of belly fat inside them so by next week when the moon has gone all looks good for a better result on the dark.
Well the good news at the moment would most certainly be all the Tailor reports coming in, areas such as Belmont Bay, both Coal and Wangi Point and Pulbar Island in particular have been fishing very well, last week I had a troll around Coal Point using Garfish and landed 7 fish all coming off the bottom while further down south Darren and Justin Worley fished over Easter and managed several fish up to 65 cm all taken on deep divers it seem the bigger fish are in the deep water around Pulbar Island, Michael Guest and crew landed a dozen big Tailor up to 80 cm with 60 cm been the average all on at night on bait.
Our resident workshop mechanic Jason Edwards is another night time angler who has had a lot of success this season on Mulloway last Thursday night he released 3 fish around the 3-4 kg mark and kept a 6 kg one for good Friday, Jason releases most of the Mulloway he catches only taking one for a feed when he needs it, this way he does not deplete the area he is fishing in its something we all should take note of thus ensuring the lakes maintains its healthy fish stocks.
As for Whiting there are still good numbers at the usual locations such as the Dropover, Air force channel and Coon Island tube worms seem to be doing the trick, Shane Lawrence and his mate Von managed 11 Whiting to 42 cm and 5 Bream on Saturday, Shane also made comment about the big numbers of Whiting swimming around there boat it seems they were up to there all tricks again not biting until the change of the tide.
On the beach the fishing over the past month has been on fire with Tailor up to 3 kg, big Bream, Flathead, Whiting and Salmon in fact as one of our regulars said it been the best fishing for 20 odd years and no crowds seems most of the younger generation either don’t have the gear to do it or have never beach fished at all, even today big schools of Mullet are been beach hauled on Blacksmiths beach we have had a lot of reports from interested on lookers one could only imagine how many big Mulloway would be following these fish up toward Redhead and with the weather due to clear for the weekend it looks like the right time to start getting ready.
Offshore is still a little unpredictable with plenty of Flathead off both Swansea and Newcastle at the moment, Allan McCafferty and John Sok caught a box full of Flathead on the weekend all these fish were taken on the drift and it was the same story down here. Trag are still been taken at Redhead and Wybung along with good numbers of Mulloway, its been years since we have seen numbers of these fish caught offshore but at the moment its starting to look like the old days with plenty of big fish coming in right along the coast, its time to dust the 80lb handline up and do a bit of live baiting at night again.
I will keep you updated as I will be doing some serious fishing next week.
Regards Jason
